What Are Natural Disasters?

A natural disaster is an event or condition that results in significant loss of life, property damage, and/or environmental damage. Natural disasters can be caused by various things such as tornadoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, volcanoes, and wildfires. Some of these events are not only natural but also occur naturally. Earthquakes and volcanoes are examples of natural events that occur naturally.

Most of the time, natural disasters are caused by man-made conditions. For example, a hurricane is a natural event but it can be made more dangerous if there is no warning for the storm to come. Hurricanes have been known to cause major destruction when they make landfall. Tornadoes are another example of a natural event that is made more dangerous because people do not take the necessary precautions. If there is a tornado warning issued then people should evacuate the area as soon as possible. If you live in a place that has a high risk of being hit by a tornado then you should purchase a tornado shelter. Tornado shelters can protect your family from the worst effects of a tornado.

Another natural disaster is a flood. Floods are a natural event that occurs when the water level rises above its normal level. Floods can be caused by heavy rains, melting snow, or even the overflowing of a river or lake. Floods can also be created artificially when a dam bursts. In the United States, many states have enacted laws that require the building of flood control dams. Many of these dams were built to prevent flooding in areas that are prone to flooding. The dams often result in flooding of low-lying areas and other areas that would normally be dry.

Floods can also be caused by human activity. In some cases, humans can contribute to the flooding of an area by digging ditches or creating levees. These ditches or levees can help protect the area from flooding but they can also create problems. If the ditches or levees become too small then they will be unable to hold back the water that is trying to enter the area. This can lead to the flooding of surrounding areas.
