How Technology Affects Your Children
What is technology?
Technological advances have been occurring at an astonishing rate over the last 200 years. In the 19th century, people were able to send messages across the world in a few hours; today, it takes just minutes! In the 18th century, people were living in mud huts and eating grass, now they live in houses, eat meat, and have cars and computers! The pace of technological advancement has increased exponentially over the last 200 years.
What is technology good for?
It can be argued that technology is good for society because it makes our lives easier and more comfortable. For example, when I was growing up, there were no computers and no cell phones. Today, we are surrounded by these technologies. The invention of the computer allowed us to communicate with each other at the speed of light. The invention of the cell phone has made communication so easy that we are always connected. Technology allows us to watch movies, listen to music, play games, shop, and do business all from the comfort of our homes. It allows us to talk to friends and family halfway around the world.
But what about the bad side of technology?
The bad side of technology is that it can be addictive. We get so used to having access to all of these technologies that we become addicted to them. We feel the need to check our email, text message, or voicemail every few minutes. We feel the need to go online every hour to check our stocks or to see what’s going on in the news. We spend hours playing video games, watching television, or surfing the Internet. These activities are not healthy for our bodies or our minds. They are not productive. They don’t help us make money, or build relationships, or learn anything. They only take our time away from doing something that is more important.
How does technology affect your children?
Technology affects our children in a number of ways. First, technology gives them instant access to information. When our children were young, we had to rely on their parents or grandparents to tell us about what was going on in the world. Now, we can find out almost everything we want to know about what is going on in the world, and even about what is going on in our own neighborhood, with just a click of the mouse. This instant access to information has given our children an advantage over their peers. However, it has also caused them to become dependent on technology.
Second, technology has made it possible for children to get distracted easily. As children grow up, they begin to develop interests and hobbies. Some of these interests are healthy. For example, a child who likes to draw may develop an interest in art. But some interests are unhealthy. For example, a child may develop an interest in playing video games. Video games allow children to interact with other children and adults in a way that is fun and exciting, but they don’t give them the opportunity to exercise their imagination. If children aren’t given the chance to explore their imaginations through play, they will lose touch with their creativity as they grow older.
Third, technology has given our children an opportunity to be entertained without spending any money. A few decades ago, children had to go outside to play. Now, they can stay inside and play video games. They can play with toys that cost hundreds of dollars. They can go online and play games for free. These opportunities have created an illusion of wealth for our children. They think that they can earn money by playing video games. They think that they can get rich by buying expensive toys. But in reality, they are only wasting their time.
Fourth, technology has given our children the opportunity to get into trouble. For example, many children spend hours playing video games. They get into arguments with their friends. They get into fights with their siblings. They become violent. They end up getting arrested. Technology has given our children the opportunity for fun, but it has also given them the opportunity for trouble.
Fifth, technology has given our children a false sense of security. Our children are becoming more dependent on technology. When they are sick, they call their parents for advice. When they get into trouble, they turn to their parents for help. They use their cell phones to talk to their friends. They use their laptops to chat with their friends. Technology has given our children a false feeling of security.
Technology is a double edged sword. On one hand, it is giving our children a lot of benefits. It is allowing them to communicate faster than ever before. It is giving them the opportunity to get information instantly. It is giving them the chance to be entertained without spending any of their own money. It is giving them the ability to connect with other people. But on the other hand, it is giving our kids a false sense of security. It is making our children more dependent on technology. And it is giving them the opportunity to be distracted from important things.
What can you do to help your children?
You can help your children understand the importance of technology. You can help them realize that they can use technology to help them learn new skills, to entertain themselves, and to communicate with other people. You can help them realize how technology is affecting their lives. You can help them realize the importance of developing healthy interests and hobbies. You can help them realize why it is important to spend time outdoors playing. You can help them realize what is happening in the world. You can help them realize which things are important and which things are not.
If you are concerned about the effect that technology is having on your children, you can start by talking to them about the importance of technology. You might say, “I know that you love to play video games. But I’m worried about the effect that it is having on you. Would you like to learn how to play a game?” Or you could say, “I’ve noticed that you spend a lot of time talking on your cell phone. Is there something else you would rather be doing?”
You can also help your children understand the importance that technology plays in their lives. You can show them how to use technology to help them learn a new skill. You can show them how technology can help them entertain themselves. You can show them how it can help them communicate with others. You can show them how they can use technology to get information. You can show them how using technology can help them develop healthy interests and hobbies.
And finally, you can help your children understand the difference between being entertained and being distracted. You can show them how video games and cell phones can be used to entertain themselves. You can show how they can use them to communicate with their friends. You can show them how these things can help them learn a new skill or develop an interest. But you should never allow them to use technology to get into trouble. You should always remind them that they can only use these things to help them learn new skills or develop interests.
Technology is here to stay. It is an inevitable part of life. So you must accept it. You must teach your children to accept it. And you must help them understand how it can be beneficial to them. Only then can you expect your children to use technology responsibly.
